Two funded graduate student positions are available for students to pursue a M.S. or Ph.D and join the Snow Hydrology Laboratory in the Department of Environmental Science and Management at Portland State University starting in Fall 2021. The successful applicants will be funded as a Graduate Teaching Assistantship or a Graduate Research Assistantship to study post-fire hydrologic responses on snow hydrology and water resources. Due to external funding opportunities this process will be outside the regular application cycle. Specifically, students will be responsible for 1) building and deploying micrometeorological station networks, conducting regular snow hydrology field work, and carrying out high resolution energy balance modeling of snow processes in mountain environments with an emphasis on innovative parameterizations of forest-snow interactions, and 2) conducting lab-based measurements of hyperspectral snow albedo, as well as black carbon and dust concentrations in snow, and carrying out radiative transfer modeling of post-fire radiative forcing on snow and snowmelt. Preferred qualifications include a background in hydrology, geography, geology or cryospheric science; skills in R, Fortran, Python, or Matlab; familiarity with processing large micrometeorological or geospatial datasets; and/or ability to operate laboratory equipment. An ability to operate on skis, snowshoes, splitboard, and/or snowmobile independently in remote winter environments is necessary for the field-based position and desired for the lab-based position. An ability to operate well in a collaborative environment is essential. Inquiries should be sent to Dr. Kelly Gleason at [email protected]. To apply please email your CV, statement of purpose, and transcripts bundled as one PDF to Dr. Kelly Gleason. Once selected you will submit your official CV, statement of purpose, transcripts, and GRE scores through the application portal.
